I am having the same problem wiht my c280 sport 1999. In my case the car starts just by turning the key back to position 0, resets and then turn they key back and the car starts. MB dealer has no clue on this issue. I found a local imports mechanic that recomended to change the starter, he is claiming that in 1999's the starter has a solenoid that prevents the starter from resetting.

I am not particularly familiar with this problem. However if the starter does not disengage this may be a possible scenario. I would suspect a solid state component like a starter though because you're not getting any diagnostic codes, correct? or did the dealer mention any diagnostic codes?
