1987 Mercedes Benz 420sel Starter Removal

What is the procedure for removing the starter on this vehicle. I cannot get to the inboard bolt of the starter

Please refresh my memory first, this bolt is accessed from the front or the rear? from memory a long extension and a universal or a flex end bar is required if it is the one i am thinking of you have to come over the transmission with a long bar, it is a pain, and also some of these do have a small steady bolt at the end of the starter this goes to the block, most have been discarded years ago.
