Car is over due for normal maintenance. Car now stalls when driving and may not re-start for some time. Sometimes car will just not start. A rest seems to help. This happened once in a while, now more frequently.

Sounds like you may be experiencing a faulty crankshaft position sensor. When the sensor fails and looses signal it will shut the car down with no restart. The Crank sensor is located on the top right portion of this diagram.

It is viewable by standing at the drivers fender and looking behind the motor to the top of the bell housing.
