Many things will cause a check engine light to illuminate, here ar a few:
Misfires
O2 sensor fault
Catalytic Converter fault
Crankshaft position sensor fault
camshaft position sensor fault
Engine Management (ME-SFI) control unit fault
and the list can go on.
If you have no complaint or symptoms that strike you as out of the norm, I would recommend having your vehicle scanned with a diagnostic scanner. Because your vehicle is Pre OBD-2 (pre 1996) you may have to bring your vehicle to a dealership to be properly scanned. They will use the MB handheld scanner that is made to read the diagnostic codes.
