I own a 3 litre turbo diesel and I have noticed a drastic loss of power when accelerating in the drive position. The car is very sluggish and takes ages to accelerate.
If I change down to 3 or 2 the car accelerates much better.
Why is this happening?

it sounds to me like you have a plugged fuel filter, the reason the car runs better when you downshift, it is because you are raising in the RPMs, and the pump is getting more fuel, try changing your primary and secondary fuel filters. When's the last time you had the transmission serviced? that could also be an issue, the transmission filter is plugged, and starving for fluid, the higher RPMs makes it run better, check out those issues and get back to me.
