1991 Mercedes Benz 190e car will not stay running

car acts like it wants to start then dies every time you turn over the engine, so took the air cleaner off and and had my wife turn it over i sparyed starter fluid in the air intake and it would keep running i think it might be fuel filter or fuel pump ??

Do you hear the fuel pump come On, when you turn key to run? If so do below and get back with some results.

You're on the right track with the filter and pump perform a fuel pressure check to rule it out and also check if the injectors are pulsing providing fuel to the cylinders
