Engine Mechanical problem
1963 Mercedes Benz 190e 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic Unknow miles

I have a 1963 Mercedes Benz 220 SEb Cabriolet in my shop that is a non-finished restoration by someone else. I have got the engine running and car running overall, and put teh car back into servicable condition except for one thing - the engine is smoky.

A compression test shows 5 sylinders at around 140 psi but # 2 is at 85; putting oil in the bore raises the compression pressure to 135, then it drops as the oil is scraped away. Clearly, this indicates worn rings in that one cylinder.

The objective for the car was to get it running and then through a Government Test to allow it to be re-registered befoe a period expiry poses a licensing issue. If the engine is smoky it will be failed.

Removing the engine and rebuilding it is not an option in the timeframe.

Do you know of a product that could be applied into the cylinder that would act as a sealer so the car can be taken for the test and not be smoky?

Hi there,

About the only thing you can do is use a heavy weight engine oil and get it tested before the engine warms up, but regardless I am sure that with a comp that low you won.T stop it smoking short of doing a re ring.
