2000 Mazda Truck Check engine light

The truck seems to be running fine but is up for emission testing and check engine light has been on for 6 months or better. What are the most common reasons for this as I don't want to pay out the fanny when it fails the testing. Thank you. Edward

First thing you need to do is have the codes read, Autozone does it free, Post the results with the code number(s). Even if the service engine light is not on, there should be freeze frame data stored.
