The header pipe on this vehicle is cracked and needs to be repaired or replaced. I have removed the header pipe. In the opening of the exhaust manifold that the header pipe attaches to, there remained a piece of honeycombed lightweight material, loose and rattling around. I'm curious to know what that is and if it needs to replaced prior to replacing the header pipe.

According to Mazda service techs and parts personnel, there is no cat that goes between the exhaust manifold and the header pipe on the 1993 model year B2200. Neither is there a replaceable element that is fitted inside the exhaust manifold. It's a complete mystery to them. So I've decided to have the pipe welded up so I can re-install it along with new gaskets and hardware and have the exhaust gases analyzed to see if there are any other steps I need to take.

Thanks!
