When installing a new head gasket, should anything be used between the head and the gasket? Would the use of an adhesive or gasket sealer cause gasket failure?

You do not use anything between the head and the gasket-just make sure all mating surfaces are thoroughly cleaned

Hi there,

There is no need to use a sealant, modern head gaskets have a built in sealant, just torque down as instructed and replace the head bolts if they are torque to yield and don't attempt to re torque after installation, make sure that both surfaces are clean and no trace of carbon or old gasket is visible.
