2002 Mazda RX7 overheating

my question is my car is overheating . we replaced the thermo and that didnt solve the prob. my mechanic doesnt think its a blown head gasket though. i can drive it for 15 mins before it starts going up . the next thing he decided is to change the water pump . my question is do u think this is the prob and or do u have any other advice
