i took the alternator off to get polished , put it back on. when i did this nothing turns on , stereo, fuel pump, gauge cluster etc. what could be wrong?

Look for a wire that got left off the large bolt-on terminal. Often that terminal is used as a convenient tie point.

If you didn't disconnect the battery first, suspect a blown fuse. Use a test light or voltmeter to measure the voltage on that large terminal on the alternator. If you find 0 volts, there is a blown fuse or fuse link wire. In that case, the radio and other accessory circuits will run off the alternator when the engine is running.
