1979 Mazda RX7 engine backfire

i drove my car yesterday and it worked fine. today it starts and revs but if i go pass half throttle the car backfires. i tried to drive and on accelaration it stutters and backfires. i had a new exhaust system installed a week ago i reved the car when i got back and a piece of the catilyst came through the tail pipe.

How much of the exhaust system did they replace? If they left the same muffler, it could be plugged up with the guts from the cat converter. This will cause both things you describe
