2002 Mazda Protege Front Wheel Drive Automatic 70000 miles

My car recently started with this "ticking" noise from under the hood. It's mostly prominent while idling, and will stop when I press on the gas. This problem has affected my mileage, I got about 20 miles less on my last tank of gas than usual.

Check your oil, it may be low or old/ dirty. That would be a cause in gas mileage drop too.
