I have a 2002 Mazda Protege ES 2.0 last month I had an engine light come on after hesitation and loosing power under my gas pedal I checked the battery cleaned the cables and reset the light had a diagnostic done of course it did not show anything because he computer was reset. However I had the alternaor checked and it was not putting out enough voltage. At that time I had the alternator changed and everything was ok. Until the other day with the same thing happened to me I took it right there to get a diagnostic done codes P0421 (Catalyst efficiency low bank 1) & P0301 (Cylinder misfire #1) Well I tried to drive it again this morning and lost power and had to pull over 4 times until I made it to a gas station. I baught and put in fuel injection and car barator cleaner and filled my tank completely up (was almost on E) with high octane fuel after ideling for a while I drove home with no hesitation or loss of power. I know it is not a timing belt because that was changed last summer. Could it be an o2 sensor , cat converter or a fuel pump. or all of the above
