Engine Mechanical problem
2000 Mazda Protege 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

Hi there. I need to replace the header pipe of my car, the piece just before the cat. I guess I'll have to replace the gasket as well
The question is, do I need to replace the O2 sensor inserted in the header pipe as well?
The mechanic said I better change the O2 sensor, but I don't see the reason as the pipe broke due to rust when joined the back part of the pipe
Why would I need to replace the sensor that is quite expensive

I'd appreciate any advice

Thanks

Hi there,

There is no reason why you can't use the old sensor, if you can remove it with out damaging it then use it, often we (mechanics) like to see a new sensor fitted is that it is very difficult to test for a defective O2 sensor, and they do slowly fail over a period of time, what they do is that they slowly read out of range and the fuel mixture slowly increased to over rich with out setting a code, O2 sensors should be replaced periodically say around the 60-80,000 Kms mark.
