1997 Mazda Protege Fan Belt

1997 Mazda Protege 4 cyl Automatic 169000 miles

my car died on me last week and i had the battery replaced. the problem continued so i had a new alternator installed as well as new fan belts. the other day i was driving and the battery light came on and the temperature gage began to rise, i pulled over and noticed one of the fan belts had snapped off. any idea what would have cause this?
