1994 Mazda Protege 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual

1994 Protge with 167,000 miles. Daughter driving and engine conks out while running normally. Engine would not restart, though it turns over. Waited about 15 minutes and restarted OK. Next morning, turns over but no start. Fuel pump? She tells me the tank was on fumes earlier in the day. Crud from the bottom of the fuel tank?

You need to go back to the basics on this. Check for spark with a spark tester, check for lack of fuel by spraying some carb cleaner in the throttle body and cranking it, (if it runs for a minute, check the fuel pressure). IF it is cranking faster than normal, it may have a timing belt issue, but based on the symptoms, I would start looking at fuel and spark first.

My Mazda only turned over and would not start, pulled out spark plug and discovered I had no spark. Can't rmember the exacat pins but took pin 10 (I Think) to GRND and computer told me PCM or Distributor. Turned out to be a bad ecu in the distributor. Had to replace entire distibutor.
