03 Mazda Protege Emergency Brake

I have a 2003 Mazda Protege (Standard Transmission), 55,364 miles

My emergency brake light comes on when I brake 'hard' or come to a complete stop suddenly (like coming upon sudden traffic), but the emergency brake is not on. WHY? This just started the other day and I am a bit concerned. Please help.

Go check your brake fluid level, this is not just an emergency brake light. It also lets you know when you are low on fluid. So you are probably low on brakes too!
