What does it mean when there is black crud on your rims? And if there's an odor coming from your car, could these be related?

Hi there,
This black dust is brake material, new generation brake pads are the blame, as for the smell, I feel that it wont be related.

Sounds like brake dust to me.
If its a sour smell then it could be the brakes are dragging and causing the pads to heat up.
Do the brake rotors get warm after driving without using the brakes often? Dont touch them with your bare hands.
