there is a strange whing noise coming through my floorboard and it sounds like what I thought might have been a bad speedometer cable. Come to find out, that is working just fine. This is a 4 speed automatic trans. The whining is there from start to stop even if the car is put into neutral and rolling. What could this be? A bad gear in the transmission?

Hi there,

This could be a failing differential side bearing, try driving in tight circles in an empty car park, one way then the other, if the noise is worse in one direction, then it may be a drive shaft, wheel bearing or diff spider gears. if noise is constant then possibly carrier bearings or transmission.
