Just noticed the last time I drove the car that the shifter boot and the encasement area surrounding it became hot to the touch inside the car. Checked the fluid levels and they were all fine. Why would that area become so warm when it never has before? Thanks

Does the shifter itself get hot or just the boot?

No, the shifter itself did not heat up, but the area around the boot and the sides of the console directly under it got hot to the touch.

Then I wouldnt expect the transmission overheated since the shifter didnt heat up, has an exhaust heat shield fell off?

Can I look under the hood and check to see if it's missing or do I need to have a mechanic look for it. I know what the shield looks like just not sure if I can see it under the hood. Thanks

You wont be finding that heat shield from looking under the hood.
