1993 Mazda Miata 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual

There is a grinding noise like something is touching while spinning. It occurs when I downshift and sometimes sitting still. I can feel it in the gearstick, too.

Check the gear oil level. Are you sitting still with the clutch pedal in? Does it make the noise with the transmission in neutral, or does it only make noise when it is in gear with the clutch in? If it makes the noise with it in gear and clutch in, it could be a bad throw out bearing.
