Engine Performance problem
1988 Mazda b2200 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual

The engine runs fine, but as I push in on the clutch to shift it backfires between every gear unless I keep the rpms very low between shifts. I ask the mechanic to check the timing and he said it checked out ok, Now what ?

Check the accelerator pump might not be squirting fuel when needed during acceleration to prevent hesitation. Could be spark plug with wrong heat range
