speedometer not working

i drive a 1996 mazda 626 4.0 135,000 miles i recently had my check engine light check and it read that my speedometer is not connected to trans axle i want to know is it connected internally or externally located outside the transaxle

Usually external you should see it right above the back drive shaft on the transaxle
