1986-mazda-626-1.8 engine. The car runs real fine on the flat but when it comes to the hills it is a bit sluggish, is this a transmission problem? I dont have problems with the gears changing (it an automatic) so I hope maybe you can help me. I live in the caribbean and I do have a couple hills to climb daily and I see other cars passing me even when I am fully accelerating. HELP. :|

Living in an island with that year model and with no IM-240 EPA regulations find the catalytic converter removed it. This will remove lack of power for life being caused by the catalytic converter. Beware that other areas can cause the same problem I would check the C/Converter first. It sounds like it. The gas mileage will increase a little because the oxygen sensor is not fine tuning the air and fuel mixture.

I'm not saying the catalytic converter is bad it could be the problem causing the sluggish when you perform a backpressure test to confirm it. BTDT

Also check the throttle position and airflow meter.
