Whenever the car idles in park, there is a very loud shrieking/squealing noise. Note that whenever I switch to reverse, or drive, or even neutral it is gone and the car sounds (and drives) fine. I haven't noticed any other problems.

It has been happening more and more frequently within the last week.

This sound is often related to a loose or worn accessory belt in the engine compartment. When the vehicle is put from park into drive or reverse the load changes on the vehicle, that may be why the noise goes away or quiets down.
