High beam always works. Low-beam comes on and off, sometimes goes back on when I slap the front of the headlamp. Nothing looks loose. Sometimes I notice a burning rubber smell from under the hood. Is this maybe connected?

If you slap the headlight, and it comes back on, then something is definitely loose. Try removing the wire harness from the bulb to see if the harness is melting on the inside. That would explain the rubber smell.
