1998 Mazda 626 Idles bad

I recently bought a cheap cash car and when the car is in drive or reverse and the car is at a stop the car shakes. When driving or in neautral or park car idles and runs fine. The check engine light comes on sometimes and the smog place said my catalytic converter is bad. Could that cause the shaking? Suggestions?
