1997 Mazda 626 O/D OFF light blinking

The O/D OFF light starts to blink after driving for about 20 miles (or less). The car drives fine until I stop and start to go again, at which time the transmission shifts hard into second gear, but not so hard into 3rd. It down shifts just fine.
The O/D OFF light will go off after switching the engine off and the restarting. It then repeats itself after several miles down the road. Any answers?
