Engine Mechanical problem
1997 Mazda 626 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual 125k miles

The other day I was driving when I looked down I saw that my battery light was on and my temp gauge said that my car was over heating. I pulled over popped the hood but there were no signs that it was overheating ( no smoke, smells, anything ). I got back in and turned it on, it was idiling high ( normal just below 1, this time about 1.5 ) then the idle started jumping from 1.5 to 2.5 over and over almost like the car was reving itself up. I have no idea whats wrong, is it the computer, the alternator, control sensor?

Lets get the alternator checked out if its okay start by checking the idle air control valve and throttle position sensor then report back for more assistance.
