I have a 1997 Mazda 626 es that will not shift into 3rd or 4th gear, sometimes it will hard shift into 3rd but it revs up to 4 or 5 rpms when going 40-50 mph. The engine light is on and I live 8 miles from town and I know its bad on the engine to drive it like that. When I bought the car I put lucas trans slip in it then drove it home. I didn't know it was low on fluid then I bought automatic trans fluid and poured it in. Still nothing I dont know if its a sensor or someone told me to do the filter.

Hi taylorr01234,

Thank you for the donation.

When the CEL indicates, an error has been detected in the engine or transmission management system. You would need a scan to retrieve the trouble code to understand what could be wrong.

The code could throw some light on what has gone wrong and possibly affecting the transmission shifting.

Forget the filter first. Get the code and let me know the EXACT trouble code so I can understand what is happening.

In the meantime, check if any fuses are blown.

Update: I took the car into the local transmission shops and they all said the same thing that it was internal. The engine light is on because of EGR and they said thats nothing. They said it needs a full rebuild thats going to cost me 1500.00. Also the line for the cruise contol was off they said but I cant use it witht he transmission like this.

What do you suggest they said that 4th gear is shot and 3rd gear slips.

Yes, symptoms does indicate the fault is as diagnosed by the trans shop.

You would have to go for the rebuild or a replacement to rectify.

Is it confirmed that the trouble codes are not related to the trans?

Yes they all said the engine light is the o/2 sensor and the transmission is not giving off any codes. What do you suggest I could do? Maybe trans stop slip liquid or a filter?

If the clutches are slipping due to bad seals, no amount of stop slip would work. You need either a rebuild or replacement trans.
