Camshaft timing marks

I had to pull the head and get a valve job done on the 2.2L engine. I have the Chilton Guide, but they do not show any detail on setting the cam sprocket and crankshaft sprocket prior to installing the timing belt. My cam sprocket has four marks, labeled 1-4 and arrows on each. The manual says line up the two marks. Please tell me what the proper settings for the crank and cam sprockets should be. When I set it to crank vertically aligned and cam arrow for 1 aligned at top, the timing mark on the crank pulley is at three o'clock. Number one piston is at top dead center.

Thanks KHLow. That is exactly what I thought. I will go back and check that something did not get off when putting the belt on and go from there.

My son got his timing belt back on but isn't sure of the marks to line it up properly - it is obviously not on correctly.

What liter engine?

Put the engine no.1 piston on its compression stroke/TDC making sure both valves on it are closed and then align the cam ansd crank pulley to its markings as indicated on the repair manual

1988 Mazda 626 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive 105000 miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
We run the car too hot and it blew the head gasket. We had the head machined and they told us to pull the cam pulley off and set it on #3 as marked on the pulley because of the reduced tolerances from machining ( to retard ). My questions: What do the numbers 1,2,3,4, indicate on the cam pulley? Is #4 the most retarded setting and #2 the least? Do the hydrologic lifters increase there throw/push at higher rpm's? And is there an easy way to set the timing marks and put the belt on? I have tryed for hours and can never get the TDC crank marks and the cam arrow to mach up. Help! Thank you , Bill

Hi zfixitman,

You have to remove the field coil together with the rectifiers etc. Most probably the armature end bearing is stuck. Try to heat the rear end with a hot air blower then remove.

Sticking in the pin would be of no use, it is for installation. Remove it to prevent the brushes from sticking to the armature.

Hi thanks for you help, I think the pin did help ather wise they get hung up on the bearing, Anywayyeah the stator has to go off with the back part, thank you. I got and Idea to put a Honda alternator in I researched the rewiring and made all new plugs etc, spent about a full day. When I finally tried to install it and line up the belt it was a joke and would take a lot of grinding to shape this one in place. Anyone got a 626 alternator for sale? z_fixitman@yahoo
