I got in to start the car and pushed on the clutch and it just slammed into the firewall. The engine fires up but I have no clutch, could it be the slave cylinder or worse?

If you checked your clutch master cylinder for fluid level and it was empty, try bleeding the system with new fluid. If no clutch after that remove the rubber cover from the slave cylinder, if fluid is present replace the cylinder. A low thin clutch disk is possibly the reason for no fluid if fluid is at the rubber cap of the slave cylinder, the slave cylinder is at fault. If the fluid level is low or out of fluid in the clutch master cylinder, bleed the system.
