the a/c fan works on position 1-3 but when you put it in position 4 it knocks the a/c out. What is wrong and how do you suggest it be corrected?

The ECT is threaded into the engine block. It unthreads by turning counter-clockwise. Remove the electrical connector and unthread the sensor. Where the sensor is depends on what engine you have.
