if coolant temp sensor wasn't plugged up in my car would i have any syptoms before it over heated

If the coolant temperatrure sensor is being used to control the activation of the radiator fan -you won't hear the fan coming On and Off this will tell you something is wrong and also the gauge will start rising rapidly to Hot
