2003 Mazda 6 hard to start

My son is a Marine and he is on limitied buget any help you could give him woul be a blessing. He said his car is very hard to start sometimes it takes 20 min to get it started. Once it starts he said it runs great. The check engine light came on about a week ago he checked all fluids and they are good.
