Hi, I have had my car 8 years and to my knowledge have never had the cambelt replaced. I am not even sure if it has one? Anyway lately while I am driving, mostly while changing down gears or reversing up hills, theres a horrible squeak that comes from the engine. I am told this could be the cambelt or the fanbelt slipping. I am driving to a city about 500-600kms away in 2 weeks and am worried about my car breaking down. What do you think? Thanks

Hi Charliegurl,

This engine should be chain driven but to confirm, chain driven would have no plastic cover at the pulley side.

You description points to the beltings, alternator, powersteerin and AC. Check them for correct tension. Adjust or replace if necessary. Cam belts (timing belts ) would not produce any screeching noise if loose.
