If I hold the gas down more it will catch gears but it will continue to slip out of gear when I stop or just keep driving. it also smokes white and stinks. Any idea's what this means?

Good evening,

I would change the fluid and filter in the transmission. The filter may be partially clogged causing these issues.

As far as the smoking, does the car overheat? White smoke is an indication of a head gasket failure.
