Low pitched squeal when backing up

When I first back my car out of the carport I hear a low pitched squeal when I hit the brake. It sounds like it is coming from the rear. When I drive a block and hit the brake to turn on to the main road, it does not do it. Once the car has warmed up some, it seems to stop. If I stop at a store and pull into a parking place, then come back to the car and back out of the space it does not make the noise. It only seems to do it when the car is cold. The brakes feel like they are working fine.

The caliper may be hanging up some when you first move the car. Have you had the brakes pads replaced? check to see how worn the brake pads are. Most pads have a low brake pad warning that makes a scraping sound when the pads get low.

This is not unusual at all. The brake pads get glazed over and form moisture overnight when parked. It is more of an annoyance than a real problem. There are things than can be done to eliminate it but it would amount to doing an unnecessary brake job. I would just live with it until you actually need a brake job.

Wrenchtech is right. If it really bothers you most automotive stores have what they call De-Squeak, it is a conditioner for disc and or drum brakes that help quiet brakes from squeaking.

I am not a fan of those gimmicks. You can ruin your pads with some of those chemicals.
