The car was little over half capacity oil level low when started it up. Pressure light came on and made knocking noise and shut off immediately. Added oil but wondering how long after start up would it take for knock to go away.

If it is full of oil the knock should go away as soon as it starts and the oil light goes out, as the oil pump starts turning as soon as the crankshaft starts turning. If it doesn't then it's likely that the engine will need to be replaced because the bearings were damaged from the lack of oil. Even if it does go away the lifespan of the engine has been shortened though.
