I would check for a plugged fuel filter first. You have all the symptoms.
I don't have a listing for a 270ML. Instructions for a ML370 below. If these don't work let me know.

I've replaced fuel filter.
But still will not start except with easy start.
I did run fuel low on gauge. Could this have caused a blockage somewhere?
Fuel pump is on the engine near the front.
Many thanks.

Your fuel pressure should be 54 to 61 lbs. If it is 100 lbs then your fuel pressure regulator has failed. There is a fuel shut off safety feature built in so the car will not start.
As I said, I have no listing for your car. The closes I get is the 370 and there is a TSB (technical service bulletin) out for a fuel pressure issue with an updated larger fuel filter which requires installing larger fuel lines. I don't know if this applies to you car but it is the same motor. I would suggest calling a dealership and asking and we can go from there.
