More than likely this is an issue with a bushing or mount being worn and loose.
Due to it happening when braking and turning, I would start with the steering gear mounts/bushings.

Basically the power steering gear (rack and pinion) needs to be held in place and then as you turn the steering wheel it pushes or pulls the tires in that direction.
When the mounting bushings of this gear are worn then it starts knocking and making noise when they are put under pressure. So when you hit the brakes or turn it increases the pressure and instead of the rubber mount holding it in place it allows the metal of the frame and gear to bang together.
What I would do is lay on the ground next to it and have someone turn the wheels to get it to knock and see if the rack is moving. It should be perfectly still.
