Sounds like gears low on oil, howling louder adds rotational. Seems to howl faster as speed increases.

Hi,

It sounds like you have a faulty left front wheel bearing. If the sound gets louder when turning right, then the left is the issue.

To replace the bearing will require some specialized tools. For example, you will need a press to both remove and install the new bearing into the steering knuckle assembly.

If you look below, I attached the directions for the removal and replacement of the bearing. Take a look through them and let me know if you have questions.

I don't know if you are interested, but I did include the OEM part number for the bearing and the labor time to replace it. See pic 1 below. Additionally, the remaining pictures are the directions for replacement.

Let me know if this helps or if you have other questions.

Take care,

Joe

Is this a job for a BMW mechanic or is it pretty standard?

Hi,

Most shops should be able to do it without too many issues. If you have the tools at home, you could do it. The press is my concern. Most people don't have one.

Let me know if you have other questions.

Take care,

Joe
