my heater blows sporadically and eventually grinds to a stop, only to start up again later, then grinds to a stop again.

Souds like the blower motor, replace it like this:
HEATER BLOWER MOTOR

Removal

From engine compartment, disconnect battery negative cable. Pull back rubber strip and remove
retaining bolts from upper heater wall. Lift up blower plates and pull off plugs. Disconnect retaining
straps and remove blower motor.
Installation

To install, reverse removal procedure.
