Hi,
Does this ever happen when you are climbing a steep hill or when the engine is under a load? If it does, that is most likely related to a weak pump or even an engine vacuum leak.
The easiest thing to do is check for an engine vacuum leak. This will cause a lean fuel mixture and can cause backfiring. Here is a link that shows how to check for one:

If you find no leaks, then you should check fuel pressure. I don't know if the fuel filter has been replaced or not, but if it is original, that's a possible concern.
