So I bought the vehicle listed above from a friend who bought it from an auction for me. Drove great until I lost the key. Got a key replacement from dealership. First thing I noticed there was no lock/unlock button on key BMW symbol and realizing my key needs to be recognized by the starting system I tried to get info on line and it seems I need to have the ability to use my lock button as part of the process to recognize new key if I try resetting manually, ex. Put key into ign. Turn to on position of position 5 times. Yada, Yada. My boyfriend has a friend trying to help and he doesn't have the right stuff to check codes deactivate any old keys, because I guess you can program up to 10 keys before having to replace part so I don't know exactly what he ended up trying to do but it still won't crank over. All the electronic light on dash light up when I click key into 2nd position but beyond that, nothing.

You will not be able to program your own key, I would call the dealer and a local automotive locksmith to get a price for the job, they have the correct software to do the job, it should cost about $240.00. The older BMW's you could program the key yourself but the newer models they took that away. I would also get the correct key before the programming.
