The other day I came to a stop and the truck shut off. It started right back up but when I pulled it out it seemed a little sluggish until the RPMs got up. Well then, I noticed that I lost all my gauges except for the oil pressure and battery. No prnd21 or miles lite up on the display neither. It also used to blink service 4x4 but that no longer blinks when it's running now. Also, the engine light is on which it was before. Code for the knock sensor. So, I realize I lost my gauges and I am on way home every stop I feathered the gas so it wouldn't stall and stopped short each time in hurry up and pulled out. I eventually noticed that it seemed like it was in second or third gear because it would start to tac out around what I'd say was like 50 MPH. When I got home and messed with it, it will blink security on the left side where the digital display is but as I said no longer says anything with key turned or on. I tried to read some things and come up with possibly and ignition switch. Well, I got one from the junk yard but needless to say with no luck. It didn't change anything. And as I was taking the old one out and moving wires around, I tried to see if anything would start to work if there was a loose connection but no luck. I also read it was an instrument cluster. I got three from the junk yard although they are the ones with the two lights on the left bottom corner for whatever that's for. Mine had the Transmission temperature there because it's the HD I guess. So, not sure if that matters or not but I did try changing the gauges and no luck either. With the old switch and with the new. Because the switch I got from junk yard was a 10 pin like what I needed but came from a normal 01 1500 that had the other style dash than what I had. At first I thought that was the difference in the number of pins on the connector but then seen that one had only 10 like mine but that's irrelevant. If anyone has any ideas of what I can try or how to diagnose the problem I'd greatly appreciate it. I'm at a loss. I can add videos and pictures if it helps. Let me know.

This sounds like a classic BCM going out, but to be sure you can get a CAN scanner from Amazon for about $30.00. here is a video to show you how:

Here is a scanner link:

This guide can help as well also I have included the BCM replacement instructions in the diagrams below just in case:

Check out the diagrams (below). Let us know what happens and please upload pictures or videos of the problem.

Thanks for getting back to me. I am going to take a look at it today. I will post some videos so you can get a better idea of what's going on. I do have an obd2 scan tool. Nothing great but it does the job, but I am wondering is that CAN scanner an entirely different thing or are they one in the same. I will post pictures and videos in a few hours when I get a chance to. Thanks again.

Videos would be great! Yes, the CAN scanner does the entire vehicle not just the drivetrain, they are the hot ticket when it comes to car problems.

Well, I tried to put a video, but it won't work it says not enough memory or something so I'm going try and clear out my phone tonight. As it turns out anyway, I tried to start it and I guess it's not working now. So, I'm going to charge it for tomorrow and trying post a video then. I will post another picture though soon as this loads. But the first picture is key in the off position second will be with it turned to on.

I was looking at the cluster wiring diagrams, and it looks like there is a ground by the upper left kick panel we should check. Also, let's recheck the fuses that run the clusters. Below are the wiring diagrams so you can see which fuses and how the system works. Check out the diagrams (below). Please let us know what you find.

Okay. So, I just wanted to get back and let you know what happened. I ended up just taking it to a shop. Well, someone worked on it but wasn't there when I picked it up, so I never found out for sure. First, they were saying it was a wiring issue from the trans or something along those lines. Well, I never did see anything that looked like it was rewired or messed with. But anyways truck got fixed and I didn't get to find out how. Sure enough, I knew it would happen again. Here we are 5 months later. I just had the truck there for two weeks guys saying he busy this that and the other. Long story short finally says oh come get it we can't figure it out. When I dropped it back off, I talked to one of the techs and he said he remembered now that it was the vehicle speed sensor. So, idk what to believe. I'm in the middle of doing a head job on a Buick and repairing rust issues on a buddy's truck so I haven't had time to get to the truck but when I do if I get it figured out I will try get back on and say what the issue was in case anyone else comes across the same problem.

I have a 2001 2500HD Duramax. It did basicallyly this same thing back in 2010. The dash would shut off except oil pressure and it would only have reverse and 2nd gear. When you shift into drive it would hit pretty hard and you would be in 2nd, so sluggish starts and 50mph MAX speed. It did it once in a while. Finally, it quit long enough to bring it into a shop and after a bunch of hours they figured out that a fuse holder was loose, and the fuse wasn't making contact with the hold. So they squeezed the holder tighter, and everything worked great. And now here I am 13 years, 2 engines, 3 transferase's, and 2 tranny's later and it just started to do the same exact thing! Been to long and I can't remember which fuse but that's going to be the first spot I look. If you're wondering about all the drive train parts, well big chips and programmers will find the weak link. I have the pickup back to stock now and honestly, I like driving it more than my 2019 GMC AT4 with the 6.2L, except those 6.2L are darn quick! Hope this helps and good luck.
