Is the check engine light on when the engine runs? Is it flashing? As far as a knocking, that could be an internal engine issue. Take a look through this link. It discusses the most common engine sounds, their causes, and how they are repaired.

Next, do me a favor. After driving it, look under the vehicle at the catalytic converter and see if it is red hot.
One last thing. Could you confirm the engine size. What you indicated wasn't an option.
