1998 Lincoln Town Car starting the car

my key will not turn. it will not leave 1st postion.the shift lever is in park.the brake is on.iti checked fuses and relay. i think the key needs to be re programmed. thanks Terry

I am not a pro mechanic but this sounds like a tumbler or worn key problem.
Try a spare key?
To the best of my understanding- if the programing were bad the key would still turn in all positions but the car would not start or only run for a short time.
